In the 19th century, Samaná Peninsula was sold to the United States for 1 million pesos by the Napoleonic forces.
The natural safety of Samana Peninsula developped the ship-based commerce. The Samana Peninsula also became a region of immigration, attracting Haitians, Puerto Ricans, Jamaicans and other islanders from the Caribbean.
